Line length

The number of characters per line of text.

Line length is how wide your text column is, measured in characters. Lines that are too short force the eye to jump constantly. Lines that are too long lose the reader between the end and the start of the next line.

A good rule for body text is 50 to 75 characters per line — about 10 to 12 words. On wide screens, a max-width on the text container keeps line length comfortable even as the page scales.
