The invisible line that letters sit on.

The baseline is the imaginary horizontal line where letters rest. Most letters sit on it; descenders like "p," "g," and "y" hang below.

Aligning baselines across columns of text or between adjacent elements makes a layout feel intentional. When baselines drift slightly, the design feels off even if you cannot pinpoint why.
