Kerning

The space between two specific letters.

Kerning is the spacing between two specific letters next to each other. Some letter pairs naturally look too close or too far apart, and kerning fine-tunes them so the word reads evenly.

You usually do not need to set kerning by hand — most fonts ship with good defaults. But on big headlines, kerning is worth checking. Pairs like "AV" or "To" often need a small adjustment.
