Ligature

Two or more letters merged into a single shape.

fi

A ligature is what happens when two or more characters are designed to flow into one. Common examples are "fi" and "fl" — the dot of the i merges with the bar of the f.

Modern fonts include ligatures automatically, and you usually should not disable them. They make text look smoother by avoiding awkward letter collisions.
